Picking Bugs out of the Paint: The Art Of Plein Air Painting
Dates: July 18-21
Cost: $400
Class Limit: 12

Bring your paints and palette to translate the complex beauty of Yellowstone into the visual language of art. You’ll spend mornings and evenings sketching and painting outdoors—known as plein air painting— when the shadows are long and the color is rich. During these field sessions and in the classroom, you’ll discuss fundamentals of value, design, and color, and planning larger studio paintings from plein air studies. Instruction focuses on oil, but will include pastel, which shares many concepts and techniques.

New! Capture Yellowstone with Pastels
Dates: October 2-3
Cost: $200
Class Limit: 13

Learn to create dynamic landscapes in pastel- the perfect tool to approach the splendid autumn color in Yellowstone National Park.  This two-day course will offer expert classroom instruction in the mornings, covering such topics as a painterly approach to pastel, broken color, texture, design, pastel brands, papers, and framing.  I’ll demonstrate in both charcoal and pastel and help you prepare for creating pastel paintings on location.  Afternoons will be spent in the field, putting what you’ve learned into practice with individualized guidance.  We’ll finish the class with a friendly group critique.

What is plein air painting?
En plein air is a French expression which means "in the open air", and is particularly used to describe the act of painting in the outside environment rather than indoors.
